The Cause

The Stamford KIC IT Triathlon benefits Kids in Crisis, Connecticut's only free, round-the-clock crisis counseling center and emergency shelter for children ages newborn to 17. Launched in 1978, Kids in Crisis has helped more than 100,000 families and children dealing with abuse, neglect, homelessness, mental health issues or extreme family conflict.

Kids in Crisis is known best for its two emergency shelters, where up to 20 children live each day. Struggling children can take advantage of a loving, therapeutic environment to help them heal physically and emotionally. While staying at Kids in Crisis, each child receives comprehensive care including ongoing individual and group therapy, on–site medical care at our TLC Health Center, and educational support to ensure academic success. For more information visit www.kidsincrisis.org

Not surprisingly, as economic and personal crises have mounted, the demand for the shelter services offered by Kids in Crisis has increased – more than 33% over 2008 figures. Because it is the only facility of its kind, there has been a most dramatic increase in the need for services for the littlest children – those under the age of 5.

Athletes who choose to participate in the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon as a fundraiser will see their support at work right away. Consider:

  • $40 buys one week’s worth of formula and diaper for a baby in our care
  • $80 provides Helpline counseling for a worried parent
  • $150 enables Kids in Crisis to present a workshop in an area elementary school that teaches kids about physical and verbal abuse
  • $500 allows for a complete medical exam and psychiatric evaluation for a traumatized child at the TLC Health Center at Kids in Crisis
  • $750 provides winter jackets, hats and gloves for the 10 children staying in the Crisis Nursery
  • $2000 will feed 20 children and teens in the shelters for one week
  • $5000 provides yearly gas and maintenance for three Kids in Crisis vehicles to transport children to school, appointments, family visits and more
