Important News from the Race Director Regarding This Year’s Race

Dear Athlete,
 
There are many things that delighted everyone who participated in the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon; the rocky terrain and shells while entering the swim leg during dead low tide was not one of them. The good news is that we will not run this race again at low tide.  While nature’s conditions are part of the challenge of any race, we do apologize and regret any injury or inconvenience athletes encountered. If you were unable to complete the race because of an injury from the rocks and shells, we’d like to offer you a complimentary admission at next year’s race. Please email us at kicit@kidsincrisis.org.
 
The date for races such as this are fixed years in advance, and for safety and logistics, it can’t start earlier because of darkness and can’t start later due to increasing traffic on the public roads. Overall race and athlete safety is our primary concern, as evidenced by the performance of the EMS medical staff. We do check the tide charts, and even changed the swim course to accommodate low tide. Cummings Beach is typically an excellent deep beach to start a race, but this was a "perfect storm" of an unusually low tide right as the race started. 
 
More importantly, over $141,000 was raised for the charity, Kids in Crisis, which provides services to troubled and at risk children and teens in Connecticut. Over 500 athletes participated, 20% more than last year and we were thrilled to welcome two physically challenged athletes and hope to grow this division in future years. The competition was fierce at the beginning, middle and back of the pack. The musical entertainment, food and post race amenities were second to none.
 
On behalf of the Hartford Marathon Foundation and Kids in Crisis, we are truly sorry if you were hurt or the conditions didn’t meet your expectations. I thank you for your participation and for your return next year on June 26, 2011.

Bike Course Preview This Sunday!

Join Cliff Scherb of TriStar Athlete and Dr. Heather Gansel of Fitness Matters for a course preview group ride this Sunday, June 20. Meet at Zody’s 19th Hole Restaurant at the E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course, 451 Stillwater Road in Stamford, at 8:00 a.m.

This is a great opportunity to ride the course before the race and have your questions answered. Riders of all abilities are welcome to attend. The group will be stopping periodically throughout the course route to discuss the 24.8 mile loop and allow riders to rest. No rider will be left behind on this ride. Join us for this fun and informational event!

Run Clinic on June 4

Join Ironman participant and noted triathlon coach Peter Berrisford for the Stamford KIC IT Run Clinic on Friday, June 4, 2010. Go for a run at Sportsplex, where Peter will analyze your running form, gait and cadence. Be sure to wear your race day attire and bring a water bottle and heart rate monitor, if you use one.

The clinic will take place at Sportsplex, 49 Brownhouse Road in Stamford, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The class will begin promptly at noon and will take the full hour, so allow enough time before and after to change. All registered athletes are invited to a KIC IT Triathlon Preview Event at Vineyard Vines on Greenwich Avenue, on June 10, 2010, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and wine, and have the opportunity to speak to the race director and have your questions answered.

Course maps will also be available. Vineyard Vines is offering 10% off all merchandise and 10% of all proceeds will be donated to Kids in Crisis. Please note this is not packet pick up.

Exclusive TriCup Trophy to be Awarded to Top Triathlon Club Team

It's new, it's coveted, and it could be yours! The TriCup is an exclusive trophy that will be awarded to the top triathlon club at the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon. This trophy will be held by the winning team each year. Be the first club to have your team's name engraved on the TriCup.

USATriathlon's team point system will be used, which awards a 1/2 point for every team member who finishes, so the number of athletes could make the difference between going home with the TriCup — or just going home. For more on scoring, click here.

Enjoy an interactive spin session where Peter will share tips and techniques to help you prepare for the longest leg of the triathlon.
